Ethical Use of the DSM in Practice

This training explores the ethical, practical, and culturally responsive use of the DSM in clinical practice. Therapists will examine how to use diagnostic tools to support, not define, client care—recognizing both the value and limitations of DSM classifications. Participants will gain clarity around common ethical challenges, such as over-pathologizing, cultural bias, insurance implications, and the pressure to diagnose for access to care. Through case studies and discussion, therapists will reflect on the intersection of clinical judgment, cultural humility, and diagnostic accuracy in supporting client well-being.

Upon Completion, Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how cultural identity, systemic oppression, and lived experiences may impact diagnostic interpretation and application.

  • Discuss the implications of DSM diagnoses in clinical care, documentation, and insurance reimbursement.

  • Apply strategies for using the DSM in a way that aligns with both ethical standards and client-centered values.

  • Reflect on personal and professional biases that may influence diagnostic decisions.
